The story starts with Lauren's mom getting blown away in a tornado and goes downhill from there. Add in a fake marriage where the couple haven't seen each other for SEVEN YEARS. That readers are expected to believe this is mind-boggling. Is the assumption that romance readers are less intelligent?

The story is full of odd details and awkward moments.

"Her room was perfect, except for the blue carpet. It was like a big wart on her room. Not that she'd ever gotten warts. Jenny Steven's had a wart once on her finger and she had to wear a My Little Pony Band-Aid over it." What???

Lauren is like Jekyll and Hyde. She berates Chase when he does kind things. She kisses him, accuses him of man-handling her, kicks him, and then laughs hysterically all within 15 minutes. Lauren has known Chase her whole life. At one point she tells him he is lucky he doesn't have any sisters. Then "she remembered that his mother had died while giving birth to his stillborn sister." Are you kidding??? It's tough to figure out if Lauren is stupid or insensitive. The fact that Chase sticks around is the biggest mystery.

Nothing Lauren says or does makes sense. She can apparently make enough money as a part-time waitress to pay a hired hands to cover her work at the ranch when she is gone. She has enough paid workers that she can afford to take weekends off (said no rancher ever).

Lauren doesn't want to be beholden to anyone, but was only able to keep the ranch be a use she was given a huge amount of money by her fake husband. Then we learn that his plan all along was to bind her to him so the SEVEN YEARS he was gone and didn't contact her. Imagine a dog marking his territory and you get the idea.

There are a number of negative stereotypes and comments about women which I found odd given the target market.

Two stars instead of one because it was free.

Loving Lauren West Series Book 1 edition by Jill Sanders Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This story was not believable at all what's so ever! It started as a very unrealistic scenario with the children in the field on a picnic and not realizing there was a massive storm brewing.. Really?! The characters were un-relatable, Lauren was really hard to like, let alone love. There were soooo many holes in the plot. Telling the reader Lauren was a virgin in her late 20's, but never touching up on the subject after Lauren and Chase make love for the first time. He really couldn't tell? Also letting the reader know Chase had a few hook ups during the 7 years he was away for college, but never coming clean and being honest about it with Lauren. The author told us Lauren was faithful and true, but not Chase... The editing needed work, the plot needed work, over all it was a light and easy read, but not worth 5 stars. I won't be recommending or reading the next book in the series.
When Lauren' s father dies, she is eighteen, has two younger sisters and a $100,000 loan she knew nothing about against their east Texas ranch. The loan holders are her father's best friends, and while they mean well, they plan to take over operation of the ranch she has been running for years. Then her friend Chase makes her an offer she can't refuse. Now it is seven years later and Chase is back in town to take over his father's veterinary practice. And Lauren is afraid her independence and all she has worked for is in jeopardy, unless she holds him to the bargain they made when they were much younger.

While the book was engaging enough that I finished it, there were aspects of the storyline that I really didn't like. For me, there was no emotional connection with or between the characters, more like a much shorter book with little character development. I had hoped for more.
SPOILER- don't read if it is going to bother you. This story is a modern day running the ranch. Losing her mother to a tornado when she was 9 and feeling guilty about that, then her dad dies at 19 and leaves her with the ranch but a $100,.000 debt. Fortunately the loan is owed to his best friends so they just want to take control but leave her with her home so she can raise her two sisters. One a older teen and one a little younger. A big responsibility for a 19 year old.

So, after the funeral she finds out what her father owes, etc. The hero to the rescue. He gives her the money with the stipulation that she marry him. she does. He goes off to college and to vet school. Now, what bothers me most is WHY would he do this. They didn't even date and he hardly paid any attention to her in high school. Okay, so he secretly loves her! But still, $100,000 is a lot of money. Now she had a crush on him in school as well but never let him know.

I can go along with part of that. Here is what bothered me. This girl had a chip on her shoulder the size of Texas. she absolutely seems to hate him for saving her ranch and her livelihood. Seems to me she should be grateful and at least friendly. After all, she agreed to the terms to get the money so why be mad at everyone else. She was mad at this guy for 7 years. When he returns home, after refusing any money that she tried to give him as payback, she is livid with him. She acts like he gave her a disease and she wants to get even. She had not one kind word for him or to give him the time of day. I just didn't understand her anger with the world.

I got tired of her and quit reading. He moves on the property in the bunkhouse and sets out to get the property back in good repair. She had let everything run down in her efforts to survive and pay him back. Then she blows her top because he put a new roof on the house. He is trying to take ofver and she can do everything herself. Well, she hadn't been doing that good of a job so far, seems like she would have been aware that things were going downhill and be grateful she had someone that cared to help out. Her two sisters were worthless. This one just didn't do it for me. The heroine was not the least bit likable and there is wonder as to why he was in love with her. It would be like loving a porcupine skunk combination. Prickly to touch and stinky!! I gave up.
