RUSH is the Greek version of THE HELP.As a Southern alumna of a different sorority than the author's, I'd been looking forward to the release of the book since I learned of its existence. I was not disappointed.
It was well-researched, the characters authentic and believable for the most part. Through the years, I have worked with sorority women as an adviser and as an international volunteer. In these roles, I visited over 100 collegiate chapters throughout the US and Canada, including almost all of the SEC schools. Ole Miss was a perfect choice for the setting.
Collegians today are indeed concerned about injustice, and they have the energy and creativity to propagate change. Yes, they enjoy the social aspects of sorority life, but their Greek experience captures so much more. Ms. Patton didn't ignore the negative aspects many associate with sororities and fraternities (underage and binge drinking, peer pressure, elitism, and the occasional poor adult role model, for example). But, she also captured Greek life at its best: life-long friendships, mentoring, leadership, philanthropy, scholarship, and responsibility, among other things.
I found it easy to connect with the story. Best of all, it made me laugh...and cry. For me, that makes it a success. I am sending a copy of the book to my college roommate.
Kudos to the author and her team for producing an excellent read! I predict it will soon be a best-seller.

Rush A Novel Lisa Patton 9781250020666 Books Reviews
“Rush” was an easy read with many of the characters, similar to people I have met along life’s journeys. It was a wonderful book causing one to analyze their own prejudices, the way it has always been done, and the need for change on so many levels.
If you are a true southerner, this book may cause you to re-evaluate what you have always accepted as the status quo. You will walk away questioning,”why?” And for the most part, there will more than likely be few answers to your questions.
Having thoroughly enjoyed Lisa Patton’s previous works, it was with great excitement to see she has a new release. The new novel far exceeded my expectations. When I started reading it, I never put it down until I was at the end of this well researched, incredible novel. I had no idea that this social injustice existed. At the same time, the storylines and individuals were so charming, funny, and sad at the same time. It is a fantastic read. I highly recommend it to all! Once again, thank you Lisa Patton. Your hard work is very much appreciated.
This book, to put it short and sweet, is The Help set in a southern sorority house.
But, the message is the same. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I am a southern lady, raised in the old southern traditions. All of them EXCEPT racism. I can honestly and to my pride can say those attributes NEVER had a place in our home or family. I attended a SEC school where unfortunately that is not the case. The old adage that hate is taught not learned is so very true. If I knew that I had a small part changing this culture then I can live in peace with myself and my Alma Mater. There are still strides to be made, but we are closer to this being a non-issue than an issue that destroys lives and puts a black eye on all the people who stand by and do nothing.
I love, Love, LOVE this book! Rush is very well-written; although it's a novel, I had to remind myself of that at several times during the course of my reading of this book. I couldn't put it down. I was in a sorority in college, was Rush Chair, House Chair, and a couple of other offices, too, I believe. I was recently Chapter Advisor. If you, your daughter, niece, granddaughter, etc., is even contemplating going thru rush (or recruitment), I encourage both of you to read this book. If you believe in social justice, read this book. It will not disappoint. In addition, it might be worth noting that this is one of the ten best books I've ever read.....and I've read over 6000 books.
Lisa Patton’s novel RUSH is a story about young women, all excited to start college at Ole Miss, each coming to campus with different baggage, so to speak. Not only are they planning to rush a sorority, but they have parents, or lack thereof, to share or not share. Additionally, there is a woman at a sorority that appeals the most, who is the warmest of women and she works in the house as a housekeeper and is beloved by all.
There is one thing that sets the young women, and their elders apart, the underlying tension between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots. The haves’ belief that the sorority, which must uphold many rules, need not cater to those they wish to exclude. Basically, let’s keep things like they were in the Stone Ages and nobody will notice because the world hasn’t changed and why should it. (Read this with the sarcastic tone in which it was written)
While you might imagine this to be a light read, quite the opposite. The story is steeped in southern tradition, Patton depicts old-fashioned ways in her characters, and the book offers a fictional look at how a new generation might approach the cynicism of generations gone by. While we know inequality frightfully remains today, the characters give us hope that there are ways to bring people together.
Charm and heart and soul, sass and dialogue so pitch-perfect it's astounding! Lisa Patton's engaging novel, Rush, is a story with a timely message that book clubs will absolutely love to discuss. I enjoyed every line of this southern-set novel. This book has it all, and deserves every accolade it has received. I've said it many times author Lisa Patton is in a genre all her own!
Being a girl from the South, and a sorority girl to boot, I bought this book thinking it would be just like Lisa Patton’s previous books, full of mayhem and ridiculously funny situations. I was wrong. This book is funny, but also heart wrenching and these characters capture your imagination. I love these characters, even the villain! Do yourself a favor and purchase this book. It’s a story with a lesson of love, compassion, loyalty and change
