Anne is a 36 year old spinster, she was nurse maid to her recently deceased parents and now she wants to have a love affair. Michael is a scared, former prostitute. Anne pays Michael to take her virginity and give her a month of romance. The writting took a bit of getting used to, it was repetative and truncated. I couldn't count how many times Anne was refered to as spinster by the authour and Michael. There were several passages that consisted of only one or two words, repeated. Death and desire. Desire and death. Once I got past that the characters and the story was very engrossing and darkly sexy. Someone is out to get Michael and he thinks using Anne will draw his killer out. Anne and Michael have their demons, they're lonely, want love and acceptance. One seduction at a time they grow closer. Every sex scene is layered with tension, longing and fear. Very interesting read.

The Lover Robin Schone 9781575665702 Books Reviews

Although this book was a fascinating read with intense moments of sheer poignancy, it tended to annoy me at times to the point where I would take a break to fan my overrought nerves.

Anne is a thirty six year old spinster, who after years of looking after ailing parents finds herself an heiress on their decease but well past her prime. She has no looks to boast of but she has fortitude and determination. She goes to London with the purpose of paying 10 000 pound for a male prostitute called Michel des Anges. She wants to experience the joys of sexual gratification not wishing to die a deprived virgin. He was once much in demand for his legendary beauty but an accident left not only his face scarred but also his heart. No woman has asked for his services for the last five years so he is anxious in case Anne is repulsed by his appearance and may therefore reject him.

Anne had coveted Michel for years but knew that he would not even notice her much less show any interest in her. Now however, she is in a position to make him an offer he has no intention of refusing. Anne is a loving, passionate woman who explores her sexuality in the hands of an expert and amorous lover. She is tender and devoted which is shown by her loyalty to her ill parents. Michel however, is persecuted by his demons and a mysterious character from his past who not only threatens him but also the woman he has come to care about.

Though the story kept me engrossed, I felt that the characters allowed their weaknesses to get in the way of feeling true happiness. Anne constantly thinks of her spinsterhood and plainess even at the most poignant moments and Michel of his deformity as if they are unable to transcend the superficial and experience their inner beauty that is hinted at but not fully exposed or explored. They somehow feel undeserving of love because of their physical shortcomings and this is something I found annoying.

There is also a fine film of despondancy and despair underlying the whole story which I found depressing. Even when Anne and Michel make love I had a sense of the macabre which is not overtly obvious but lurks behind their every thought. Personally ,I don't like the oppressive in romance and more than anything else, this was the reason I gave the book such a low rating.
I keep getting into trouble by writing long reviews but forgetting to include 'spoilers' in them. So while I'm leaving this short so as to avoid spoiling other readers enjoyment, I don't want brevity to be misunderstood as lack of interest and I don't think I'll be saying anything that will give away the events in the book.

Both books, The Lover and it's sister book Gabriels Woman are up there with the best books I've EVER read. That includes literally any book outside of the erotica/romance genre. The stories are incredible. The twists and connections lavished through the stories ( and yes I'm pretty much including both books on this) are stunning. While you don't HAVE to read both books to understand the stories, it would be a dreadful shame not to. They aren't quite stand alone but can be read as such with both giving enough detail to understand the other book. BUT seriously, it's well worth the time to indulge yourself with a sexy historical story that has amazing love scenes, tragedy that's so twisted it's painful to imagine. And you have superb endings. Please read. Too beautiful to miss out on and while you'll ache reading the guys story, you'll rejoice for them also in the end. I so hope you enjoy.
This is another superbly crafted novel by Robin Schone which includes Gabriel (from Gabriel's Woman) and his life friend Michel de Anges.
The two men (aged 40) have been friends since they saved each others lives on the streets of Paris at age 13.
In Michel's past women would have paid him to have him love them. Now, however, as the result of a fire (five years ago) that scarred him both emotionally and physically, he feels he should be paying them. And now ironically, the woman he is to meet is willing to pay him 10,000 pounds for one month of his pleasure.
"Her name was Anne Aime. Her age was thirty six."
That my dear friends is as far as I will go. You will undoubtedly love this erotice romance which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Worthy of 5 stars.
I realized I had read this book before around chapter two. It is a well-written book. The author has a gift of the written word to be sure. This being said, this book was not an easy read, however this reader felt compelled to learn the truth behind the actions of the main characters. In the end, it all makes sense. Definitely worth the read, or in my case second read. You won't be disappointed.
